Street and Solid Waste Department
My name is Bernardo Gutierrez, I started working around the age of 18 at Double R Pipe and Supply. I would test, paint and thread pipe daily. I worked there for five years then I got a job at a Gas Plant in Eunice, changing out motors and huge radiators to make sure the plant stayed running. There I learned to do concrete work and framing. I also learned to run the backhoe as well as acquiring permits for confined spaces. From there I got hired on at Alco as a manager and learned everything from stocking to team management. It was only later after working for the City that I truly began understanding teamwork and what leadership means. I realized that taking the responsibility is the job of the leader. Teamwork is working together. I started working for the City in 1998 as a Sweeper Operator and slowly worked my way up to Supervisor of the Street/Solid Waste Department. There I learned to operate not only the sweeper but the loader scrapper and blade. I also achieved my CDL to drive a dump truck and my demolition license for removing condemned houses. I also got certified in the backhoe. After achieving all of this I feel the greatest thing is I get to work with two of the bests crews any supervisor can have.
My name is Larry Boughner I've worked for the City for over twenty years and during that time I have learned a great deal. I started at the Housing Authority as a maintenance man; rebuilding cabinets, replacing doors, carpet and doing routine maintenance before moving up as a Director Assistant, then later Director. I learned how to write grants, five-year plans and budget under tight resources. Later I transferred to the Street Department as a Shop Maintenance, then I moved up to Sweeper Operator, then to my present position as a heavy Equipment Operator; where I have gotten certified in the backhoe and acquired my demolition license, as well as learned to run equipment like the front-end loader, grader water truck, welder and stripping machine. Some of my hobbies have come in handy at work as well. Few people know I'm a beekeeper, but as a beekeeper I have removed huge bee hives for the City as well as trained other coworkers on the handling and removal of bees. The few people that know me outside of the City know I like to read, cook and travel. Things most people never find out about me is that I'm an avid photographer, collector, author, entrepreneur, artist and have been ordained. As a brief history; before I was out of high school I started my first business painting signs on the weekends and after school. Long after, I had painted signs on buildings, billboards and even huge oil tanks. I worked in a local body shop and learned to paint cars, in trade for a space in his shop to paint signs. I got tired of smelling paint fumes on a daily basis and went to work with a cousin, laying flooring. I gained the needed knowledge to successfully lay flooring and moved on to learn something new. I got a job as an electrician's apprentice and began learning skills for residential wiring but it wasn't long before I got a job offer in a local loan company and jumped on it. It was a depressing job where people whispered all day and rarely spoke to one another. I decided it wasn't for me so I applied for the open position at the Housing Authority for the City. Long after I was hired and was utilizing the skills I learned from previous jobs and in the evenings was studying to be a personal trainer. I got certified as a personal trainer and was working evenings at a local gym as a trainer. My schedule was tight but I managed to juggle things around and add in some photography classes and before long I got published in some top magazines. One editor for one of the magazines liked my stories that accompanied the photos and asked if I would be interested in writing a book. It wasn't long and I took up his offer and wrote my first children's book "Mr. Cosley's adventures". Times flew by, people came and went but I remained with the City because I enjoyed the work and the people I got to meet. I have accomplished many personal goals in my life and very successful ones as well but that's for another story.
My name is Flabio Gomez. I have been working the for the Street Department for four months. My hobbies include reading, writing, story boarding, video editing/making, going on long walks, bowling, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends.
Solid Waste Department
My name is Misty Steele. I work at the Convenience Station. I have been with the City for almost four years. Just a few things about me; I am a proud mother of four children. My oldest is fifteen and my youngest is ten. I have my hands full, to say the least. Especially with only one girl! I love to watch and support my kids in their sports and events. I also like to relax and put puzzles together on what little spare time I get. I am an only child, unless you count my dad's other kids. My mom raised me by herself and I believe I'm a good mom because of her! I enjoy my job not only for the people that come in but also the crew I work with! Everyone works together and makes a great team. There are of course good and bad customers but it's the few that tell you how much you mean to them that makes the job worth it! Another perk is getting to run the machines! The backhoe of course is my favorite but the loader is fun too! I would eventually like to learn how to operate more though! I like learning new things and occasionally getting out of the normal comfort zone! All in all I have to say I'm blessed to have the job, family, and life I have!
My name is David Ruvalcava. Who am I? I love my job and the people I work with. They teach me a lot and my job sometimes can be hard but it's fun. I go to church and I am a youth leader there. I also help with the kids at my church and hang out with my family on the weekend. I also like to cook out and I thank God everyday for letting me go to work. I also like going to the gym.
